2020/21 PSL Awards winners announced

The 2020/21 PSL Awards winners have been announced at the prestigious event which took place on Sunday evening.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the award was held virtually as it officially capped off the inaugural campaign of the DStv Premiership.

In what was a largely entertaining season, Mamelodi Sundowns finished as champions to claim a fourth successive league title, with AmaZulu finishing as runners-up while Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) won the Nedbank Cup – had players as winners of various categories at the event.

One of the biggest winners of the night was Sundowns’ Peter Shalulile. He went home with the PSL footballer of the season award as well as the DStv Premiership Player’s player of the season gong in what was a rewarding night for the Namibian forward.

Having shared the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award alongside Gabadinho Mhango last season, the 27-year-old led Masandawana to the title with his tally of 22 goals and eight assists in 39 games across all competitions. He was a shining light for the Brazilians in another title winning campaign and no one can debate he is well deserving of the award. Many of the Sundowns’ stars have also mentioned how hard he works in training, just to stay at the top of his game.

Elsewhere, it was Benni McCarthy, who steered 12th placed Usuthu to second after his appointment in December, that won the Coach of the Season award. He pipped Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena and Abafana Bes’thende’s Mandla Ncikazi. After a run of six points from seven games, McCarthy was appointed in December and managed to turn the team into a winning side that now amassed a 54 point total at the end of the campaign, in second place to champions Mamelodi Sundowns. Given his achievement in such a short time and also with the crop of players at his disposal, no one can also say the ex-Bafana Bafana star is not deserving of this award.

Other winners include SuperSport United midfielder Teboho Mokoena who got the Goal of the Season award for a brilliant goal against Stellenbosch.

In addition, there was special PSL Chairman’s award for Isilo Samabandla, King Goodwill Zwelithini KaBhekuzulu and General Bantu Holomisa.
