Amakhosi face competition for Veluyeke Zulu’s signature

Kaizer Chiefs transfer target Veluyeke Zulu is attracting serious interest from several other clubs following his good performances for first-division Richards Bay FC this season.

The 26-year-old defender is believed to be in Gavin Hunt’s plans for a team overhaul at the end of the season, and Amakhosi have reportedly already gotten in touch with the player.

However, recent news emerged that Zulu is also on the radar of a European club, in addition to interest from Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Supersport United.

It is believed that a Danish top-flight club has talked to the player camp to enquire about his availability. However, it remains to be seen whether this is just a ploy to speed up talks with interested PSL parties.

A source close to the player revealed recently, “These three teams are talking to him for his services. Supersport has also joined the race for the player and has already approached his representatives.

“The big three contacted him directly, but he referred them to his agent.

“Even though the boy is looking forward to joining any of those teams, first he might want to see if Richards Bay wins promotion to the DStv Premiership before taking any decision.

“He is willing to join the Chiefs. He sees an opportunity to play in Naturena, and he is now ready for PSL. The reason Arrows released him [in the summer of 2017] is because he was not ready at the time.”

Richards Bay are edging closer to promotion this year and, leading the First Division pack with 12 games to go, and are unlikely to want to let Zulu go.

His contract expires in June 2021, but the Bay can trigger a clause to extend his stay by one more year. This, however, would do little to ward off serious interest from bigger clubs.

Zulu has clocked 1440 minutes for the Bay this season and is an established first-team player under Coach Jean-Francois Iosciuto. He has played 56 matches for Richards Bay since joining in the summer of 2017.

The lanky defender has also played for Maritzburg United, Golden Arrows and Royal Eagles.
