After coming close on two occasions, SuperSport United striker Bradley Grobler is finally closing in on the coveted PSL Golden Boot Award. However, he is facing stiff competition from one of last season’s top scorers, Peter Shalulile.
By his own admission, Grobler admits he should have surpassed the 20-goal mark by now, after all that is the target he had set for himself at the start of the campaign, and he looked well on course after he reached 10 goals in 10 games.
However, Grobler suffered a setback in terms of injury and spent a few weeks on the sidelines, allowing the likes of Peter Shalulile and Thabiso Kutumela to catch up in the race for the Golden Boot.
Both players managed to score a brace each in their last encounters, which saw Grobler move to 16 goals, while Shalulile moved to 13 for the season.
With one match to go, the Matsatsantsa marksmen has opened up on the tight race for the award.
“It was nice to get on the scoresheet again. I want that top scorer award, there’s no hiding, I think for any striker that is the goal – to win it,” Grobler said to the club’s media.
“You know I’ve come so close on a few occasions before and I just missed out, which is hard to take so this season I want to win it, although it’s not over yet, in football nothing is ever over until its done.
“I’ll go into the weekend’s game looking to score more goals and still disappointed because it would be lovely to get four goals on the weekend and finish on 20, but it was disappointing after 10 games, having 10 goals – 20 goals looked really achievable, but you know how football goes, you get unforeseen circumstances where I got a slight injury halfway through the season and it takes you a couple of games to get back into the flow again, so unfortunately I might just fall short,” Grobler added.
Except Shalulile scores a hat-trick, Grobler is more or less guaranteed of the award and it’s safe to say he would finally lay his hands on the award this time around.
