The rebuilding process at Kaizer Chiefs is well and truly underway. The aim is to close the gap between the Amakhosi and leading teams in the league. Finishing eighth in the DSTV Premiership left a sour taste in the mouths of their fans.
The Amakhosi have brought several players to bolster the squad, but former Kaizer Chiefs crowd favourite Robson Muchichwa is not entirely impressed with the acquisition of a particular player.
Kaizer Chiefs have signed Keagan Dolly. The player completed his move to the club after a four-and-a-half-year stint in France with Ligue 1 side Montpellier. His return to the PSL has not wowed Muchichwa despite the experience he brings.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns player joined the Amakhosi as a free agent and has signed a three-year deal with the Soweto giants.
Commenting on the deal, Muchichwa described the acquisition as not targeted to keeping the club relevant in the future. He thinks the club should have prioritized youth ahead of experience. According to Muchichwa, Kaizer Chiefs should focus on building a new and robust team to challenge now and in the future.
“For me, I don’t know my brother. Kaizer Chiefs need to build a new strong team. With what we call young, experienced players,” Muchichwa said.
“Yes, one or two old players won’t be a bad thing, but we don’t want to find ourselves in a situation where we have to build a new team every season. We need to bring people who will gain experience and grow up with the team.
However, Muchichwa is ready to give Dolly the benefit of the doubt, describing his situation as 50/50. Muchichwa did not hide his disappointment at the club’s failure to take advantage of the available young and experienced players in the window.
“Let’s see what [Dolly] can give us. We didn’t hear much about him where he was playing [in France]. Maybe it will work. It’s a 50/50 situation.
“I would go for young, experienced players [because] if you can take a look, there’s a lot of young, exciting players who did well for the likes of [Golden] Arrows.
