DStv Premiership Match Report: Sundowns edge closer to another title win

Mamelodi Sundowns edged closer to another DStv Premiership title after recording a 1-0 win at TS Galaxy on Sunday afternoon.

Sundowns made four changes from the previous outing, with goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene, Khuliso Mudau, Promise Mkhuma and Lebohang Maboe were brought into the starting XI.

The Brazilians were up and running in the 17th minute after Peter Shalulile scored the opener after his headed effort went in off the post for his 11th league goal of the season.

The home side at a big chance of their own to level up from 12 yards after they were given a penalty for an handball incident at the half-hour mark. Lindokuhle Mbatha stepped up to convert but his shot was saved by Mweene.

Red-hot striker Shalulile almost doubled the lead for the visitors five minutes before the break but his deft header went wide of the post after a teasing cross Dr Mudau.

TS Galaxy made two changes at the break with attacker Wayde Lekay introduced in place of defender Ebrahim Seedat while Masilakhe Phohlongo came on for Mbatha as Owen Da Gama was seeking for a way back into the encounter.

Masandawana kept threatening each time they come forward and Gift Motupa could have made it 2-0 for them but his effort struck the side-netting after another teasing cross by Mudau.

Sundowns made their own changes in the final quarter as Gaston Sirino returned from injury to replace Motupa while Lyle Lakay came on for Modiba at left-wing back.

Meanwhile, Phohlongo could have dragged his side away from the jaws of defeat but he missed the glorious in stoppage time.

Sundowns did enough to take all three points and the win takes them seven points clear at the top with four rounds of matches to go.

If the Brazilians can get four points from their next two games, they’ll be crowned champions once again. Up next for Sundowns is a continental clash when they take on one of the most anticipated games in the CAF Champions League when they take on Pitso’s Al Ahly. That game is expected to bring much fireworks and we can only wait till the 15th of May to see how that plays out.
