Hunt Clears The Air

Hunt reacts to Bafana Bafana vacancy talk

Gavin Hunt has insisted that his focus remains firmly fixed on the Kaizer Chiefs amid rumours that he may be The One to take the South Africa national team to Qatar in 2022.

The job has been vacant since the sacking of Molefi Ntseki following Bafana Bafana’s embarrassing failure to qualify for the African Cup of Nations 2021.

Hunt is among a host of names linked to the job, including Pitso Mosimane, Benni McCarthy, Steve Komphela, Herve Renard, Carlos Queiroz, and Eric Tinkler.

And with Amakhosi having a troubling season, hearsay of Hunt opening a new chapter sounds like it can hold some water, on paper.

However, Hunt has laughed it off. Asked whether the Bafana Bafana job is on his mind, he said:

“[Laughs] Chad, how many times have we been down this road. It’s nowhere near. My mind is on Wydad on Saturday, that’s the most important game.”

This is not the first time Hunt has been linked with the South Africa gig. Before the appointment of Ntseki in 2019, the five-time PSL winner was once again near the top of the list of potential candidates.

For now, it seems, the prospect of him becoming the next Bafana Bafana manager exists only in the imagination.

Kaizer Chiefs take on Wydad Athletic Club at the FNB on Saturday 3 in a bid to secure a spot in the knockout stage. They succumbed to a 4-0 loss in the first leg in Casablanca.

Wydad lead the group with 10 points, with Horoya and Chiefs sitting second and third, respectively, with five points.
