Following a one-nil away win to TS Galaxy on Saturday, Kaizer Chiefs sneaked into the top eight. In an underwhelming domestic season, Chiefs have little to be thankful for except the last-minute push that saw them into the top eight.
Their struggles this season has, however, come at the expense of their head coach Gavin Hunt. A big loss to many, but they’ve managed without him so far. To say his shoes will take some filling is putting it mildly, but one man seems unperturbed about it all.
Kaizer Chiefs legend Robson Muchichwa has been talking about how the hugely successful coach can be replaced. Hunt with four league titles to his name was shown the door recently following a poor run of form in the DSTV Premiership. While many may question the idea behind giving him the boot, Muchichwa believes Hunt is the architect of his failures.
“For me, he failed. He failed because I didn’t expect him to go out there and win things, of which if he did, that was going to be a bonus,” Muchichwa said.
Maybe Hunt was expected to rebuild the team and put them on a path to greater conquests, but he may have presumably created a heightened expectation based on his successes.
Muchichwa accuses him of not giving the team direction and thinks the team was justified in firing the veteran coach.
“But we were expecting him to rebuild the team, give direction to the team, of which none of those has materialized because now the team was even number 12. Which shows there was no direction there.”
One would expect that for the accusations levelled at Hunt that Muchichwa would have answers to who his replacement should be, but the legend parried when pressed.
“I think for me I don’t want to say bring this one or bring that one, but look for somebody who is more organized, who knows what he is doing,” he added.
“Somebody who can look at that situation at Chiefs and say ‘Okay, what am I going to do to improve the situation?’ That’s the type of person who is needed now.
He doesn’t care who the person is as far he possesses the aforementioned qualities. Chiefs have some searching on their hands.
