SAFA Explain The Delay

Keet open for talks with PSL clubs

South Africa international keeper Darren Keet has hinted about his availability following his contract termination with Belgian side OH Leuven.

The 31-year-old keeper is currently working on his match fitness with first-division club Cape United.

“At the moment, I am still busy trying to find our way, you know, the whole Covid thing, it’s been difficult,” Keet said.

“To find a team, and things like that, it has been difficult, so we are just taking our time at the moment. I’m in Cape Town; I’ve just been training with Roger Da Sa’s team Cape United. So, I’m just training there to stay fit, while we are trying to secure myself for the future.

“So it will be very good to see what happens in the future. Me and my family we’ve been in Cape Town since November. I terminated my contract in Belgium because I wasn’t in the coach’s plans.

Keets finds himself in a deja-vu situation from 2019, when he spent several months team-less after his contract with Bidvest Witts ran out.

Rumours linked him with a move to Naturena, but Keet remained resolute to leave South Africa and continue his career in Europe.

And now, following a collapse of a potential move to the MLS in late March, it seems the tables have turned, with Keet eager to listen to any offers from domestic clubs.

“Of course I’ll have to consider all offers from anywhere because it’s gonna be worth my while you know. Every offer that I do receive I’ll have to look at it seriously, what the club’s intentions are, and then we can make a decision accordingly.

“It’s gotta be worthwhile for me and my family, and for our futures also. I wanna go into coaching after football and things like that so, it’s gonna be something that we look forward to and we all excited for. But, ja, of course, any offer I do get we’ll look at it.

“I’m sure there’s a few teams in South Africa that will be looking for some keepers except Mamelodi Sundowns. Sundowns don’t need a new keeper at the moment.

“We’ll have to wait and see if anyone wants me or if anyone is interested in me. No one has called me from Chiefs, no one has called me from Pirates, and I don’t think Bidvest Wits is gonna call me back.”

The former Bidvest Witts and KV Kortrijk keeper has 12 caps for the Bafana Bafana and is still in his prime years as a goalkeeper.
