The mark of a truly great player is desire and passion. They want to perform at the highest levels and constantly play for titles. This insatiable trait is what makes them champions. Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana, however, does not fall into this category. He is a man content with limited chances at Sundowns but the taste of a champion.
With limited chances, he insists that he wants to lift more trophies in his career. Kekana alongside Dennis Onyango, holds the record for most league medals with eight. Even if he doesn’t win another title with Sundowns, he will still go down as the most successful captains at Sundowns. He won the CAF Champions League with the club then took them to the FIFA Club World Cup back in 2016.
“I would say [my career at Sundowns] has been successful, a very successful one because I have won so many trophies with the team,” the 36-year-old told the media.
“The big highlight was to manage to win the CAF Champions League and go to the Club World Cup – something I have never imagined in my whole career to achieve that, but we did that in a small space of time. It was achievement after achievement.”
The Sundowns captain said ahead of the upcoming season that nothing has changed. The team will go into the season with the same zeal and determination to win titles. He wants this generation of players as the most successful generation at the club.
“To be honest, as players, we have never had a chance to celebrate those moments [of success[, as the demands of the club is always to perfect the previous season,” he added.
“We have done so much for the team, and we are still going to do much for the team. I always want to put it in context that we want to be remembered as the generation that brought so many trophies to Chloorkop.
“I believe we are on the right track at this present moment because we have brought many trophies and we want to leave the badge in a good condition. I am fortunate to be part of the team that is always striving for greatness.”
