AmaZulu FC coach Benni McCarthy has made his picks for the top goalkeeper and players in the current DStv Premiership campaign so far.
Usuthu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa saw his recent impressive form gain proper recognition as he won a prize in the PSL monthly awards.
Speaking on the goalkeeper of the season award, McCarthy further claims that Mothwa is deserving of that price and has been the standout shot-stopper in the PSL this term.
“For me definitely, not because he is my player and I’m biased but because I’ve assessed the league, teams and goalkeepers. I don’t think any goalkeeper would’ve come to AmaZulu and have good season like Veli is having, “Benni said.
“So that tells you a lot about him. He is a top top class keeper but you have to look at the log and when you who is on top of the log, you look at Sundowns, and they are at the top because they have a formidable squad. They’ve got a very good goalkeeper, experienced goalkeeper in Denis Onyango.
“But i can assure you, if Veli was playing for Sundowns, I think he would’ve had the same outcome, you know, because you got so many quality players around you, they’ve got good technical team around them. I think if they go with a league-winning keeper, then Onyango will definitely be a wise choice, but if they looking for most outstanding perfomances, then here is your guy, Mothwa.”
McCarthy also claims that two of his stars in Makheleni Makhaula and Augustine Mulenga should be getting shouts for the player of the season award.
“Player of the season, I think there’s been some fantastic players but like I said, I think in my team there’s a few contenders, but generally when you don’t win the league, it makes your quest very difficult to get that award,” he added.
“Unless you’ve been extremely outstanding, Makhaula doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves. I think Mulenga has also done so well, he is been a phenomenal but that’s a biased answer from a coach who works with these guys and knows the mentality and quality.
“But if I have to put a name there, a player who stood out and when you watch him you enjoy, then he comes from Sundowns… I think Peter Shalulile, what he has done as striker, his work ethic that he has and goals he scored for Sundowns, I think he should be on top of the list for player of the season in my eyes.”
