Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Aubrey Mathibe believes that this is the time to give Bruce Bvuma the chance to become long-term number one goalkeeper at the club.
Bvuma, who won the man of the match against Wydad in their CAF Champions League semifinal first leg 1-0 win, has stepped up recently as the club’s number one shot-stopper.
His performances have been excellent that some section of the club’s supporters want him to remain as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper going forward.
Meanwhile, Mathibe also believes this is the perfect time to retain him as the club’s number one.
Itumeleng Khune has been number one goalkeeper for years, but it could be the beginning of a new chapter in that department, with Brandon Petersen also expected to join Amakhosi by from July ahead of the new season.
“I think it’s the right time now. Why I say this is because the supporters are not around in the stadiums, so it’s nice for him to get to start that. Remember when you play with supporters in the stadium, it’s tougher. Now we are watching and following him on TV and people are starting to believe in him. When people go back to the stadium, it will be simple because they will know what he can do because he has been doing well,” Mathibe
“The boy is doing well and it shows that Chiefs have started a new journey in the goalkeeping department. He is still young and I am hoping that Brandon Petersen will also be signed. I think it would be healthy competition between them. For me, he can be number one, but having Petersen will be good for Chiefs because it will bring healthy competition. He must not take anything to his head now. He must stay calm.”
It is always good to see new players emerge and that could yet be the case for Chiefs in the goalkeeping department. Admittedly, Khune has been an outstanding servant over the years but one has to admit his best days are past him already, given his age. Chiefs will now be hoping Bvuma can put in yet another inspiring performance against Wydad in the return leg as they aim to reach the final of the CAF Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.
