Dylan Kerr says Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile may need to follow Percy Tau’s route if he has the desire to play in Europe’s big leagues.
It is already becoming a norm for the DStv Premiership Footballer of the Season to be linked with overseas clubs, just like the likes of Thulani Serero and Andile Jali have done in seasons past.
Tau became the latest player to move abroad after winning the Football Of the Season award in the 2017/18 season, while Thembinkosi Lorch was linked with several clubs in Europe.
“It’s hard to tell you if Peter would do well in (countries like) England or not,” Kerr said in an interview.
“I remember Lorch a couple of seasons ago he was chased by a couple of English clubs. One of them was Birmingham City and it never materialized. I don’t think Namibia is in the top 75 or top 25 of FIFA ranking so he (Shalulile) would not be eligible to play.
“He would have to do what Percy Tau did. He would have to go to Europe and obviously need to gets a passport or a work Visa to go to the UK. Peter’s work ethic is very, very good. You know he’s got a very, very good attitude and very good character. He’s done very, very well when he was at Highlands Park, he’s very very well this season obviously winning the player of the year.
“But you never know I mean English football has changed since I played. But I think he could do alright. But it needs a different mentality European football. Maybe that’s one of the reasons Percy Tau is not getting much game time at Brighton.”
Kerr, who played for English outfit Leeds United, believes Shalulile (27) is at the right age to perform to his best.
“A football player 26, 27, 28 is in his prime. That’s when he starts to hit a good performance level.”
