Mamelodi Sundowns against Stellenbosch

Shalulile secures late win for Mamelodi Sundowns against Stellenbosch

Shalulile scored the decisive goal that saw Mamelodi Sundowns continue their impressive form in the league. The league leaders had to dig deep and come from behind to seal a victory.

The Brazilians were back on the pitch for the first time in about a month when they travelled to face Stellenbosch on Saturday afternoon.

It was a more familiar looking lineup after Sundowns rested a number of their starting XI for their Nedbank Cup victory over Polokwane City in midweek. Themba Zwane and Gaston Sirino were restored back to the starting lineup. Elsewhere, Rushine De Reuck was handed his league debut.

Sundowns started the game on the upper hand and came close to scoring via Lebohang Maboe just after 12 minutes. However, the forward saw his effort saved by Stellenbosch goalie Sage Stephens.

The hosts got a close chance of their own when Stanley Dimgba made some good movement at the near post but saw his resulting effort go wide off the post.

Dimgba eventually opened the scoring for Stellenbosch just after the half hour mark with a quick-fire shot that crept into the net. Sundowns’ goalkeeper Denis Ontango would have been disappointed to let that go through him, having been beaten at his near post.

Masandawana had a chance to draw level just before half time but Sirino saw his effort saved once again. The first half ended with the hosts in the lead. However, there was a comeback on the cards.

Sirino grabbed the long-coming equalizer for Sundowns four minutes into the second half with a side-footed shot following a pass from Peter Shalulile.

A gloom moment for Sundowns came when they lost Kermit Erasmus to a nasty looking injury. The player only came on in the 58th minute and barely lasted ten minutes on the pitch before he suffered an awkward landing on his ankle. He was eventually stretchered off the pitch, with Haashim Domingo replacing him.

The game looked destined for a draw but there was drama late on. Deep into extra time, Shalulile rose highest to score via a powerful header following a cross from Aubrey Modiba.

Despite having three games in hand, yet another win saw Mamelodi Sundowns move four points clear at the top of the DSTV Premiership. It sees the Brazilian continue their impressive record so far this term. They are the only unbeaten side at this stage of the season and have now won their last four games in siccession.
