Kaizer Chiefs fortunes have not changed much, but Stuart Baxter can see a silver lining in the team’s current woes. The Amakhosi coach was impressed with his wards attitude as they refused to roll over for AmaZulu in a 1-1 draw.
Chiefs now sit 12th on the PSL log but were on their way to defeat number five of the season. Amazulu had taken the lead through Luvuyo Memela in the 48th minute, but Keagan Dolly struck back with two minutes of added time left to play. Chiefs won a penalty, which was sweetly struck by Dolly, handing Chiefs a deserved point.
Baxter, impressed by the output of his wards he praised their determination down to the final whistle.
Speaking with SuperSport TV, Baxter said he believed it was a good game.
He said the pitch was a bit slippery and led to losing a lot of first touches. The condition brought about a lot of tackles with many free kicks.
“Intense. Pitch was a little bit slippery and slick when it’s wet, so a lot of first touches are going away, and then that means there are a lot of tackles that you’re tempted into, and then you get free kicks given against you.
Baxter also commented on the officiating, citing the game as difficult to officiate due to the playing conditions. He, however, believed that his side was professional and kept going on. He also praised Amazulu for the quality of competition they gave his side.
Speaking on the missed chances, he said the team was used to it. He said they had to change something at half-time. He felt it was a fair result given that when they played away to Downs, they dominated large parts of the game but still lost.
He claims that against Amazulu they dominated, but couldn’t score. In looking for the equalizer, his team opened up a little more than they wanted and were at risk of counter-attacks.
