Draw specialists Swallows FC recorded yet another draw after playing out to a 1-1 result with SuperSport in the DStv Premiership on Tuesday evening.
The Birds welcomed Sifiso Hlanti, Joseph Mhlongo and Fawaaz Basadien back into the line-up while Bradley Grobler and Keenan Phillips returned for the visitors.
The first chance of the game fell to Matsatsantsa in the 13th minute. Sipho Mbule aimed at goal from the edge of the box but his effort was saved by goalkeeper Virgil Vries.
After some fine stops from Vries, Basadien opened the scoring for the hosts against the run of play with a firm header at the far post after connecting with Lebohang Mokoena’s sumptuous cross.
The hosts led into the break and after the resumption of hostilities. It was SuperSport who were more fired up. Mbule almost grabbed the equaliser with a strike from outside the box but he was denied yet again by Vries.
Truter, in a bid to stop the foray of attacks from the away side, responded with a double change in the 65th minute. Defender Givemore Khupe replaced goal-scorer Basadien while Daniel Gozar came on for Ruzaigh Gamildien upfront.
Gozar’s introduction almost made the score-line 2-0 to the hosts but his low drive from the edge of the box was parried away by goalkeeper George Chigova.
Mbule, having been denied by Vries several times in the match, finally restored parity with a header that nestled the top corner after a great cross from Phillips with 12 minutes left to play.
The visitors turned up the heat in the final moments and Grobler should have snatched the winner later on but he missed a glorious chance by volleying over the crossbar with only Vries to beat. In the end, both sides settled for a share of the spoils in what was a fair result after 90 minutes.
It is the 15th draw of the season for Swallows, who have since dropped out of the title race conversation. Six of their last eight fixtures have now ended in stalemates, as they are now earning the nickname ‘draw specialists’ based on recent results. For their next clash, they’ll be travelling to take on Maritzburg United.
SuperSport United are also in a similar position, having drawn six out of their last 10 games, winning only one game in the process. For their next clash, they’ll be taking on Baroka FC as they look to return to winning ways.
