Kaizer Chiefs are on a roll as they have started to rack up the points. Amakhosi started the season in poor form and got a few poor results that left question marks over Stuart Baxter, but things have turned around for the team.
Despite the change in fortunes, the team is still finding its feet, as it aims to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the crown. Support has come for the side from club legend and record goalscorer Marks “Go Man Go” Maponyane, who has provided an elixir for their recent failings.
Maponyane has called more consistency from the team after they managed consecutive victories.
With 18 points from 11 games, the Amakhosi have climbed to 6th place on the DSTV Premiership log. They are now 8 points off league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns
, who have a game in hand.
The Amakhosi took on their bogey team Maritzburg United on Sunday. The tense encounter saw them secure a vital 1-0 away win. It brings to five the wins Stuart Baxter has managed in his second spell with Kaizer Chiefs.
Maponyane mentioned in an interview that to make progress, the team needs to be consistent. He said that inconsistency can be dispiriting and will not give confidence to the supporters.
“But to neutral people, especially people like me who played at different teams, you look at the progress or consistency or lack of it.
“They need to be consistent if they want to stage a title challenge.
“A lot is expected, and they still command a bigger following. I mean, other teams haven’t won a trophy in their lifetime, but it’s always noted that Chiefs and Pirates haven’t won a trophy in several years continuously.
Maponyane wants the team to have a run of victories even if they would lose matches. The losses should be blips rather than regular occurrences. According to him, one step forward and two steps back would not augur well for the team.
Maponyane looks forward to the AmaZulu game, which he says will be interesting.
