Kazier Chiefs are still well in the running to secure CAF Champions League quarter-final spot after clinching a point away to Angolan outfit Petro Atletico.
Amakhosi made four changes from the side that played out to a draw against Maritzburg United at the weekend. Back from his suspension, Ramahlwe Mphahlele made the starting lineup while the trio of Njabulo Blom, Kearyn Baccus and Siyabonga Ngezana all got recalls as well. Elsewhere, Samir Nurkovic was on the bench once again.
Chiefs came close to making their mark early after going close on goal just 12 minutes into the game. Following a free-kick, one of the Petro defenders came close to conceding an own goal but his goalkeeper bailed him out with a brilliant save to keep the game level.
Within the first 25 minutes, Petro were the better side and dominated possession but they were lacking that efficiency in the final third.
Pedro were knocking on the Chiefs door and came close to scoring via Tiago Azualo just before half-time. However, his headed effort could only hit the side netting and ensured the game remained goalless at the break.
The game opened up after the break and it was Petro that came close to scoring once again. Danny took a low strike that seemed goal-bound but for a save from Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.
Chiefs then got a chance of their own through Manyama in the 63rd minute. The 30-year-old sent in a free-kick that hit the woodwork. The midfielder came close again late on after going past the goalkeeper but failed to hit the target.
It was a wasteful day for Amakhosi and perhaps an unlucky one as well. They continued to push in search of a winner in the latter stages of the game. Things got worse for them when Mphahlele suffered an injury and had to be taken off and replaced by Daniel Cardoso.
Late in stoppage time, Eric Mathoho came close to snatching a late winner for Chiefs but his strike went off the mark to end a disappointing day for the South African side.
The result leaves Amakhosi in third place with five points, level on points with Guinea based outfit p Horoya in second place. Provided Chiefs can claim at least four points from their remaining two games, it would still be enough to see them advance to the quarter-finals. The deciding match will come in their final fixture against Horoya.
