Mamelodi Sundowns legend Bennet Mnguni has called on South Africans to lend their support to Kaizer Chiefs in their bid to land the CAF Champions League trophy.
Amakhosi could join Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates as SA teams to have won a continental trophy, if they manage to beat Al Ahly in the final later this month.
Mnguni, who voiced his admiration and love for Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane, but thinks Amakhosi deserves more support than him and is confident that they will be victorious, despite going into the final as the underdogs.
“Firstly I’m South African, so I’m giving (Chiefs) the thumbs up. I’m 120% supporting them, they must go there and make us proud. We must all support them, and not Al Ahly,” Mnguni said in an interview.
“Chiefs might not play well, but they will get results for you. Coach Pitso Mosimane is very smart, so Chiefs must go there with the same mentality to grind results, and forget about pretty football.”
Mnguni also says that people should stop being obsessed with who is in charge at Chiefs presently, because Zwane and Baxter have a mutual understanding and it has been working.
“But let me be straight with you, Arthur Zwane knows the players and is giving coach Stuart Baxter more support which is good for the team. They can’t afford negativity.”
While it may seem right for Mnguni to say, it is a rather difficult ask, especially for Mzansi loyals who happen to be Mamelodi Sundowns supporters. Take the fact that Pitso has already suffered some abuse at the hands of some Brazilian supporters and you’ll see why the whole story could be tense.
If that isn’t enough, Pitso recently claimed that Chiefs are bigger than Sundowns and that further infuriated a section of the Sundowns’ supporters. The natural rivalry that exists between the two Soweto giants also means the Brazilians would rather not have Chiefs win.
However, one side must win at the end of the day and time would tell which team comes out victorious for the prestigious trophy.
