Pirates coach comments on potential crisis at the club

Orlando Pirates’ co-coach Fadlu Davids says they are confident of a turnaround despite the potential crisis at the club.

The Bucs played out a draw with Royal AM on Thursday, a result which saw them drop further two points and it’s their fifth draw of the season.

Pirates have won only two from their eight matches so far in their 2021/22 DStv Premiership campaign and are seventh on the log and eight points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Soweto side had both goalkeepers Richard Ofori and Wayne Sandilands unavailable due to their respective injuries. Also, experienced goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane has had his own troubles with injuries in the past as well.

At that point, a possible goalkeeping crisis was looming but Davids has tried to calm the nerves of those supporters who might be worried by saying that young goalkeeper Kopano Thuntsane will be ready to step up if need be.

“Of course, the injury with Richard Ofori and the injury with Wayne Sandilands at the moment, Kopano has been doing very well in the MDC and is now deputizing for Mpontshane who is our only senior goalkeeper that is available but we are not afraid,” said Davids, speaking to the media.

“His performances have been well and the goalkeeper coach has been working excellently with these younger ones and also players from the MDC. There’s been more goalkeepers and more players coming from the MDC to train with the first team. It’s steps and we are not afraid if that opportunity comes he will be able to take it and do well,” the coach added.

Thuntsane, who was on loan with Bizana Pondo Chiefs in the only season that the Eastern Cape outfit was in the GladAfrica Championship and got relegated, was on the bench as Bucs drew with the KwaZulu-Natal outfit.
