Chippa United’s contract extension talks with Thamsanqa Sangweni have failed to have a breakthrough following weeks of negotiations.
Meanwhile, Sangweni has returned to the club for pre-season preparations with Chippa United with the hope that his contract situation would be resolved soon to enable him to keep playing for the club.
He re-joined The Chilli Boys in February for his fourth spell after a stint in the eSwatini Premier League with Mbabane Highlanders.
According to word from a source, the negotiations have essentially reached a dead end.
“When he joined, he was offered a contract with an option. However, the option did not have numbers and what has since been happening is that the negotiations have been around the figures,” says the source.
“So far there hasn’t been an agreement on those figures with his representatives not agreeing to what the club is offering. As it stands, the negotiations have reached a dead-end, though hope is that there might be a change because it is important the player continues playing football.
“His representatives feel he made enough of a contribution to be worthy of an improved contract.”
Since his arrival in February, the 32-year-old made 14 appearances, showing both quality and experience in midfield as Chippa beat the drop via the playoffs.
Sangweni’s career on the domestic scene has spanned well over a decade that started at AmaZulu before featuring for the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns, Ajax Cape Town, Orlando Pirates, Maritzburg United, and Richards Bay.
