SuperSport United endured a torrid season in which they failed to land any of the available silverware, despite their flaws, the club’s veteran defender Bongani Khumalo believes there are positives to be taken from the tumultuous campaign.
SuperSport’s season didn’t go according to plan and they finished in fifth position on the final standings and that was below the standards of coach Kaitano Tembo and his men.
However, Khumalo thinks it was a decent campaign, especially with the club’s desire to have more youth players integrated in the teams, with the likes of Keenan Phillips, Jesse Donn and Gampani Lungu.
“I think it’s been positive, with all the challenges we faced, we still managed to blood in some raw youngsters, we’ve given good game-time to a lot of young players and I don’t think many clubs at this level can say that same thing,” Khumalo said in a recent interview.
“I think it just goes to show how much the club is willing to invest in young players because this is where I started my professional trade and this is where I was given a chance and I did pay my school fees but certainly with the support of the club and the great players that I was surrounded by at the club I’ve managed to grow and have what I’d like to think has been a decent career, so I hope that for these young players as well, they’ve used this year to get a taste of what the highest level requires and the demands are written and they can just get stronger and stronger for the club and for themselves,” he added.
There were recent rumors that SuperSport United were going to sell their PSL status, alongside new ownership for the club. However, they have moved to deny such rumors and insist that the plan is to continue to remain competitive and challenge among the top sides next term.
