The Gauteng region boasts of more teams in the DSTV premiership – Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Moroka Swallows, Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United, but one man feels their dominance has to end. AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu wants a situation where the KwaZulu-Natal region is well represented and dominating affairs in the league.
Sandile with his director Manzini Zungu has expressed their desires for next season. They believe they’re on the right path to change KwaZulu-Natal football.
The region has seen a surge in improvement by its teams, and there is a high likelihood of more teams joining the three already in the Premiership.
“It is our sincere hope that next season KwaZulu will have more teams in the DStv Premiership,” Zungu said, addressing the media.
“More teams from the province will (reduce) costs for us to compete in the league, and means so much to youngsters.’
“We are also looking forward to working with all KwaZulu teams to look at develop football and change lives. We want this province to dominate PSL.”
This season has seen Amazulu coached by Benni McCarthy running Mamelodi Sundowns to the wire for the title. This has Manzini encouraged that if they’re able to get five teams into the topflight that the battle for the title would yield better results.
“Just to add to that, you know with a possibility of five teams in the Province, it may be that team from KwaZulu that will challenge and even win the league next season. There are so many games that will be in the Province which will make it easy for teams to compete. More teams here means more points for a team that will dominate KwaZulu and you can do numbers.
Benni McCarthy also shares this view but also expects the teams to keep up the fight while striving to improve on current standards.
“Teams have to do what they’ve been doing this season to up their formula,” he said to the media.
“Also having so many teams from KwaZulu playing in the DStv Premiership allows us to see more talent that can be scouted.
“It will benefit teams, they will grow football in the province, and there will be more sustainability for all the teams.”
