The future of Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune will be decided after the AFCON qualifiers.
Reports suggest that Khune has agreed to meet with club management as soon as he returns from the Bafana Bafana in order to discuss his contract situation.
The 33-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, and it is believed that the Chiefs will look to end their long-term collaboration with the player.
Amakhosi have strongly felt the consequences of a two-window transfer ban by FIFA in the last two years and will likely be relishing the opportunity to dip their toes into the transfer market as soon as the ban lifts this summer.
This could signal drastic team restructuring, and the end of ‘ageing’ players like Khune, Lebogang Manyama, and others.
The Spider-Man has not had his best year, as several costly blunders have dropped him down the pecking order behind Daniel Akpeyi.
Furthermore, Khune did not play in Chiefs’ triumph over rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby, as he was away on compassionate leave following a tragic incident in the family.
It is understood that Chiefs’ management is split over Khune, who has been a long-time servant of the Amakhosi. Ultimately, the decision will likely be narrowed down to player salary demands and club needs.
“The Chiefs management is divided whether to keep him or not.” a source close to the club has revealed.
“There’s concern with his age and salary if they have to offer a new contract.
“By the looks of things, both parties are headed for divorce.”
Khune started his career within the Chiefs youth academy and was promoted to the first team in 2004. Since then, he has played over 320 matches for the Chiefs.
He also has over 90 games for Bafana Bafana.
