Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt has complained about the lack of efficiency in the final third by his side. This comes in the wake of their goalless draw against Petro de Luanda in the CAF Champions League group stage on Tuesday evening.
The tactician seemed satisfied with the result but claims his side lacked attacking prowess to do a double over their Angolan opposition, having defeated them 2-0 last week in Johannesburg.
As we detailed in the match report, Chiefs failed to convert the few chances they had on Tuesday. Azalao’s header hit the side netting in the 43rd minute. Their next attempt came from Manyama who brushed the upright in the 63rd minute. In the 70th minute, Manyama once again came close but chipped the ball over the bar for a corner. The game ended goalless much to the disappointment of Gavin Hunt.
Speaking to journalists after the game Hunt said: “Look, we knew they would be much tougher at home and they were. We also played that way where we tried to play on the counter-attack,” Hunt told the media after the game.
“So, we came back a bit, 10-15 metres back – we dropped the team down. It worked. I just thought our final ball [and] final pass around the box let us down.
“That is just due to the quality, we just have to be better there, but all in all we had a good couple of moments and they had a couple of good moments,” he continued.
“So all in all it looked a real tired performance from both sides. It was one of those things and obviously, the draw, I think, it is a fair result.”
Regardless, Hunt remains confident his team will qualify to the next round, citing that they need only a draw and a win in their final two group matches against Wydad and Horoya.
“We will possibly have to win and draw, I think it might get us in, but we have Wydad and we obviously have Horoya away which is not easy as well,” he added.
Chiefs might have dropped important points yesterday but still remain in a good position to qualify through from the group stages.
However, they have a tough game against run-away leaders Wydad, who have 10 points and are unbeaten in the competition so far.
If they can hold for a draw against Wydad and beat Horoya, it would be just enough to see them through.
