Sundowns’ Success

Manqoba Mngqithi believes patience is lacking in the PSL

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has shared his thoughts on the hiring and firing of coaches culture in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

He believes the habit is a hindrance to the success of many clubs in the DStv Premiership over the years.

Having experienced such treatment while at Chippa United where he was fired after two games, Mngqithi thinks supernatural guidance is sometimes needed to survive on the job.

“The truth is, we need to pray to God to help us in dealing with things that we can’t control, to ask God to grant you that serenity to deal with things and those you cannot deal with,” Mngqithi said, addressing media.

“Even the Bible tells us to forgive those who have harmed us, because at times they don’t know what they are doing, Many decisions that are taken by club bosses, more especially in firing of coaches, are usually counterproductive to their clubs.”

The Masandawana co-coach also mentioned the Orlando Pirates double treble-winning team and his Golden Arrows side that won the MTN8 as examples of teams who were patient enough to reap the rewards.

“Statistics are saying teams that are chasing coaches a lot, are usually not the most successful. Those who are successful are the ones that understand the value of continuity in sport.

“The development dynamics of the team requires time. I will give you example with Ruud Krol at Orlando Pirates, he started winning trophies in his third season and as soon as he won the treble, they chased him away, got a new coach and won another treble because it was continuity within the squad.

“When we won MTN8 with Lamontville Golden Arrows, it was my third year and that tells you a lot of development team dynamics,” added the Downs mentor.

To buttress Mngqithi’s points above, Black Leopards coach, Kostadin Papic, who was only appointed on a two-year contract in February, is already on the verge of being sacked, with the club now likely to suffer relegation.
