Cape Town City can finally breathe a sigh of relief after ending their winless run in style on Saturday. An impressive 3-0 victory over SuperSport United saw the Citizens bring an eight-game winless run in the PSL to an end.
You would have to go back to the 6th of February for the last time Cape Town City won a league match and that win came in a 4-0 home victory over Bloemfontein Celtic.
For their latest outing, the Citizens made three changes as Bradley Ralani, Tashreeq Morris and Abbubaker Mobara were all recalled while Matsatsantsa made four changes, with Grant Kekana, Kudakwashe Mahachi , and Bongani Khumalo all returning back to the fold. There was also a first start for Jesse Donn.
Both sides had early chances to open the scoring but fluffed their lines. However, it was evident Cape Town City were the hungrier of the two sides, given how ambitious they were with the ball in attack. Fagrie Lakay then came close to opening the scoring for City just at the half-hour mark but he sent his effort way over the bar.
Lakay soon got another chance and this time around, he made no mistake. Ten minutes before the break, the 23-year-old gave City the opener from the spot after Thatayaone Ditlhokwe brought down Morris inside the area.
Riekerink made a tactical switch at half-time, bringing on Mpho Makola to replace Abdul Ajagun for fresh legs in midfield. It went on to be an inspired decision from the manager.
Makola might be renowned for his attacking exploits, but he made a crucial clearance off the line just after the hour-mark. He then went on to double City’s lead in the 64th minute after connecting brilliantly with a cut-back by Thabo Nodada to tap in from close range.
Mduduzi Mdantsane came close to making it three for the Citizens just after replacing Nodada in the latter stages of the game with a first-time effort that went just narrowly wide off goal.
Morris then put the game beyond doubt and capped off the win for City in style with five minutes on the clock. He turned home Thamsanqa Mkhize’s deflected cross to make it 3-0 for the hosts.
The win saw Cape Town City move up to seventh place, with 30 points. The Citizens will now hope the victory can serve as some morale ahead of their next league game against Kaizer Chiefs.
