A big clash awaits on Sunday and it has always been one of the most anticipated fixtures in every PSL season.
This should have been a top of the table clash just like it was seen last season, but the story is not the same because the Soweto giants are out of contention for the DStv Premiership title.
By history, it is still a big clash between two of the traditional ‘Big Three’ in the top-flight, but the fortunes of both clubs do no tally at the moment.
Unbeaten Sundowns are six-points clear at the top of the DStv Premiership look and closing in on a fourth successive title national title, and are still going strong in the CAF Champions League this season.
On the other hand, Chiefs have been below-par this season with so many anonymous performances over the course of the season. They a stuck in a race to make the top eight as reaching the continent seems difficult for them to achieve but not impossible.
Gavin Hunt’s men have won only five of their 22 league games so far this campaign, placing them in danger of a lowest-ever league finish (which is currently ninth).
In the big games this season, Hunt and his boys have managed to raise their game and this particular fixture against Sundowns has provided them another opportunity to make a statement after last month’s success against Orlando Pirates.
The hosts (W13 D8) have a better and excellent record which clearly reflects in their position on the log. As for Chiefs, only Swallows FC (13) and Golden Arrows (11) have endured more than Chiefs’ 10 draws this campaign though.
It is match between the ever-reliable defence of Sundowns against Chiefs’ miss-firing attack. For the Brazilians, this will be their eighth game in 23 days, an area the visitors may look to exploit them knowing them have been tested physically and mentally over the period.
Sundowns have been dominant in the last four meetings between the sides have all seen a result, with three wins for Sundowns and one for Chiefs.
History and form favours the Brazilians but Chiefs are not pushovers and could be the side to inflict a first DStv Premiership loss of the season on them.
