Mamelodi Sundowns are well renowned for setting records as well as breaking existing ones in the PSL. Once again, they are flying high this season and we take a look at some PSL records that could still be broken by the Brazilians before the current campaign comes to a close.
Largest points margin to win the PSL
As it stands, Kaizer Chiefs hold the record of winning the PSL by the largest margin of victory.
In fact, Amakhosi had a respectable 12-point margin over Sundowns when they last won the PSL.
At the moment, Sundowns are only three points ahead of second-place Amazulu but three games in hand means that gap could be extended to somewhere around 12 points, if results go their way.
Most consecutive PSL title wins
If Sundowns win the PSL this season, they will put themselves in esteemed category, becoming the first team in history to win the competition in four consecutive seasons.
As it stands, Sundowns have won the PSL title in three successive seasons on two different occasions. They share that record with SuperSport United who also achieved the same feat between 2008 and 2010.
Sundowns are already the most successful team in the PSL era and this record will give them even something more to brag about over their rivals.
Least number of losses in a PSL season
So far in the 2020/21 season, Sundowns are yet to lose a single PSL game and they remain on course to become the first team to finish a campaign unbeaten.
At the moment, Kaizer Chiefs hold this record, having lost only twice on their way to a title winning 2004/05 campaign.
Sundowns’ best PSL season in terms of few losses saw them defeated three times.
The next set of records are still achievable for Sundowns but will take something special to make them happen.
Most points in a PSL league season from 30 games
Sundowns currently hold this record but so far have 43 points from 19 games played so far. With 11 games remaining, the maximum they can attain would be 76 points. Although, this would mean they must not drop a single point and win all the games in that period. Their current record stands at 71 points when they won the title in the 2015/16 season.
Most goals in a PSL season from 30 games
Sundowns presently share this record with Kaizer Chiefs. Amakhosi scored 55 times on their road to the 2004/05 title while the Brazilians reciprocated the effort in their title wining 205/16 campaign.
The Brazilians have scored 32 times so far this season, meaning they will need to score another 24 goals from their remaining 11 games to set this record.
With less than two goals per match, on average, this one might prove to be a herculean task for Sundowns to achieve.
